New York State Police are reminding drivers to follow the state's Move Over Law.

Under the law, drivers must slow down and move over anytime they see emergency lights, vests or reflectors.

The Move Over Law applies to both sides of the roadway, not just the shoulder on the right.

The penalty for violations starts at $150 with two points on your license. They grow significantly with repeat offenses or injuries caused.

"If people would just take the time to reduce their speeds, move over if they can safely and please put the phones down," said Trooper Mark O'Donnell. "Don't be distracted, period, much less while you're going through a work zone. We really want these individuals to get home to their families and certainly the first responders as well."

According to the latest numbers from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, New York averages eight fatal crashes along its roadways every year.
