BUFFALO, N.Y. — The city of Buffalo has made a big push to hire the next generation of firefighters with several new initiatives focusing on making it as easy as possible to sign up for this year’s exam.

From now until April 29, candidates can sign up for the test to join Buffalo’s bravest.

Anyone who is a Buffalo resident is encouraged to sign up. Applicants must be 19 years old to take the test and 20 to be appointed.

This Saturday, applications will be available at city hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They can also be found at multiple locations throughout the month of April. Information on applications can be found here.

The department is reaching out to every corner of the community to ensure they have a diverse department that reflects the entire city and past recruits say it's a career that keeps on giving.

“It's extremely rewarding," said firefighter Alicia Montalvo. "I mean, just being there for our community in ways that other people can't know or haven't been trained to be. It's it just serves a purpose. And I know even myself, doing other things and coming into this. I feel like I'm definitely serving my community at this point."

The exam only comes around every four years. The last day to apply is April 29.
