NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — It's Fire Prevention Week, and there's a focus on kitchen safety.
Firefighters at the Frontier Fire Hall in Niagara Falls are sharing safety tips as a lot of us work and learn from home.
So here’s what to remember.
Number one: the only thing that should be on top of your stove are pots or pans. Be sure to watch out for any oven mitts, towels, trash, or other items that may have been left on top of the range.
And when you’re baking anything, be sure your towels aren’t accidentally getting into the oven when you close the door. That's an easy way to start a fire.
This year, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York is trying to get the word out about new range-safe knobs that are specially created with children in mind. You have to squeeze and turn the knob so kids cannot accidentally turn on the stove and release the gas.
"When you're cooking, make sure your pot handles are turned on the inside, not the outside where they can get knocked down and flip the hot item onto the floor," said Ed Tase, first vice president of FASNY of Western New York.
When it comes to holiday decorations, it's a good idea to use LED candles in your pumpkins. It's also recommended that you steer away from putting corn stocks and hay bales in front of your home. Those are a fire hazard. Even those cool cobweb decorations are extremely flammable.
