Seneca County leaders approved a resolution Tuesday evening on the future of New York state's largest landfill.

The Seneca County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of a resolution regarding the Seneca Meadows Landfill.

They are requesting the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation conduct an investigation into any harmful effects that could potentially come from the continued operation of the landfill.

"It affected both the middle school at Waterloo and the high school at Waterloo, where we couldn't even open up the windows, because when we opened up the windows, the recycled air just traps it within the building," said Heather Bonetti, a teacher at Waterloo Middle School.

The resolution also asks the DEC to identify the county as an interested party in the Seneca Meadows permitting process.

This comes as the landfill's operator is applying for a DEC permit to continue operations through 2040 and expand by 47 acres.

If that's denied, Seneca Meadows is scheduled to permanently close next year.
