BUFFALO, N.Y. -- House Republicans are prioritizing the passage of their energy plan this week — the first bill introduced this Congress.
U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy said it's an all-of-the above proposal that, while focusing on increasing domestic fossil fuel production and rolling back Biden administration policies, also has room for renewable sources.
"We're not going to windmill our way out of this problem. Natural gas is a clean fuel. It's a plentiful fuel and it's a fuel we can produce right here at home," he said.
Meanwhile, a Manhattan grand jury could soon indict former President Donald Trump on charges related to hush money payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
"When I am traveling around my district, nobody has brought up President Trump and Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen. This is absurd that this prosecution's going forward and it just demonstrates pure politics," Langworthy said.
The congressman said he has not seen outrage from Trump supporters as much as bewilderment about the case. He said he has not heard plans for any major protest and has no concern about being at the Capitol.
"I don't believe anyone should protest because this is a simple trial," Langworthy said. "The president is going to go in, get a mug shot and walk out the door. We're not talking about any sort of really serious charge."
A strong advocate for the Trump campaign in 2016 and 2020, Langworthy said he did not see the former president's first rally for the 2024 effort. Langworthy said the more candidates to highlight the Biden administration's failures, right now, the better.
"There will probably be a plentiful field here," he said. "The American people are going to make this decision. The registered Republicans that are the grass roots."
