HAMBURG, N.Y. ā€” After a legal challenge to new district maps, New Yorkers are now voting in the second round of primary elections.

This round sees candidates Nick Langworthy and Carl Paladino facing off for the redrawn 23rd Congressional District Republican primary.

Paladino has been a controversial figure in Western New York politics for years, even making racist remarks directed toward former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. Langworthy has served as the Erie County chair of the New York Republican State Committee since 2019. Both self-described Trump loyalists have traded jabs in multiple political television and radio ads.

The current 23rd District will also see a special election with Democrat Max Della Pia against Republican Joe Sempolinski to complete the remaining four-month term of Congressman Tom Reed, who resigned in May.

Attorney Benjamin Carlisle will face off against longtime office holder Sean Ryan in the Democratic race for the 61st district. Republicans in the newly drawn 24th District have a choice between sitting Congresswoman Claudia Tenney and Mario Fratto, an attorney from Geneva.

Finally, incumbent Congressman Brian Higgins faces a rare challenge to his seat from his own party. Democrat Emin Eddie Egriu is competing in the newly-drawn 26th District congressional race which covers Buffalo, Niagara Falls and much of Niagara County.

Polls close at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
