BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Six different applicants have provided bids to New York to run mobile sports betting in the state.
One of the bids is made up of a team of industry giants DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM.
"What I love about some of the applicants is their diverse background in the industries of which they bring in together — retail, entertainment, sports of course," state Senate Gaming Committee Chair Joe Addabbo said.
The gaming commission will award contracts to a minimum of two platform providers and four sports betting operators. Addabbo said the process is on track now with bidders set to make oral presentations in September and finalists hopefully chosen before the end of the year.
"Mobile sports betting is not a light switch. You don't flick it on and watch hundreds of millions of dollars for education and the jobs that are created and the economics flow," he said. "It takes a little while to get up and running and ramp up to maximum potential."
Addabbo said there is a chance things could be held up a bit but believes it’s important to have operators in place by early 2022 in time for the Super Bowl. Last year, the event drew more than $4 billion in wagers.
"We need to capitalize on that Super Bowl and then we evaluate," he said. "Then we'll take a look at how mobile sports betting is doing in New York and if we didn't hit certain numbers at the Super Bowl, then we'll look to make amendments and make changes and try to improve it."
Lawmakers continue to have concerns about the 50% tax rate the state will require from operators in New York with Addabbo's Assembly counterpart reportedly voicing them again during a gaming conference in Saratoga this week.
However, Addabbo said he has a relatively optimistic view.
"Nobody knows but I think the market for New York's mobile sports betting is there for our taking. I think so many people globally are looking at New York to do so well in the arena of mobile sports betting. That's why there was so much interest in the bids that were accepted. That's why there's so much interest industry-wide," he said.
Addabbo said he does not believe the upcoming change in governor should affect the timeline at all.
