An extension for expired drivers' licenses and permits is coming to an end in New York.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the state of emergency declared in the state in March 2020 expires Thursday and will not be renewed.

That means beginning Thursday, expired licenses or permits will no longer be considered valid by New York state.

“We have cleared up much of the backlog in previous months," Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said in a statement. "But for those who still have an expired license or permit, beginning tomorrow, they will no longer be considered valid by New York state."

Some DMV locations are still operating by appointment only, or allowing walk-ins for residents of that county on certain days.

You will want to call or check your county's DMV website before getting a new license or permit.

The deadline to get the Real ID is May 3, 2023.
