Mark Schroeder is taking a statewide post and leaving the Buffalo City Comptroller's office behind, an aide confirms.

The South Buffalo native will become the commissioner of the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

Schroeder served in the Erie County Legislature then the state Assembly and was then elected comptroller in 2011. He challenged the long-serving Byron Brown in the 2017 mayoral election, but lost.

Buffalo Common Council must now select a replacement within 90 days of Schroeder's official resignation. That person will serve through the end of the current term, which ends Dec. 31, 2019.
