Some dog pet parents consider walking the dog more of a chore than a pleasure, but new research suggests there are many benefits to walking your dog.
If you are the pet parent of a pampered pooch you know how much your dog loves to go for a walk. But there are multiple benefits for you, your dog and your community to taking your dog for a daily stroll.
Dog walkers on average are more active more often than those without dogs, with most walking about 30 minutes a day just to make their canine companions happy. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. Staying active and getting outside is also great for your body from head to toe. Walkers benefit from improved heart function and moderate walking outside helps you and your dog relieve stress.
Dogs also provide their human companions with a sense of confidence and safety. A study conducted in the US and Australia found that women were more likely to report feeling safer while walking with their dogs than without them. American dog walkers in the same study also reported feeling that their communities felt safer when neighbors walked their dogs.
There are also numerous benefits to walking outside for your dog. Not only does walking help keep their weight in check but walking outside keeps your dog’s brain active! Dogs process much of their information through scent and sound and the variety of stimulus on a walk is like an amusement park to your dog. Regular walks also help cut down on house training accidents and behavior issues because a well exercised and well socialized dog is also a happier calmer dog.
Close: Remember before you head out, take along a bag so your neighbors won’t find any gifts on their lawn. And try a different route from time to time to give your dog a chance to experience new sights sounds and smells.
