Collies have been herding sheep for centuries in the Scottish Highlands and England, you are likely familiar with the rough coated collie from the classic television show “Lassie”. But the smooth coated collie has all the beauty and intelligence of their long haired brothers, and can even be born in the same litter.

Candy Artizone works with the breed in agility trials, and shared what she loves about these unique canines.

"Well, obviously I love the reduced coat care. It is a double coated breed so it can go outdoors and be comfortable in cold temperatures for long periods of time. It can be combed out in a few minutes versus, I recommend an hour with your rough coated collie," said Artizone.

Fans of the breed love their wash and wear coats as well as their intelligence and intuition. Weekly brushing helps keep shedding under control. Quick to learn commands and routines the smooth coated collie can make a fantastic family pet and walking buddy. They are active, playful and smart and enjoy a brisk daily walk and lots of human interaction to be happy and healthy.

"I love their temperaments because they are Lassie without the hair. They've been very adaptable into society and am very proud that a number of dogs we have are guide dogs," said Artizone.
