It's officially one month until tax day. So, if you haven't already, time is ticking for you to file.

Tax Day is April 15, so you will want to make sure have all of your documents together, including documents that are separate from W-2 forms.

These documents can be for certain credits you want to claim, such as proof of child care payments.

You could also have other tax forms like a 1099, which is used to report various types of income other than wages, salaries and tips.

Now as for the actual filing, that usually comes with a cost, whether you enlist the help of a tax preparer or file them online.

But there are some free options out there for those who qualify.

"We have many free available options on our website for eligible New Yorkers. This includes NY Direct file, and free file tax software for eligible New Yorkers, again check your eligibility on our website but you can save money on tax preparation fees this year," Sara Carlson, director of community engagement, NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, said.

All of the information can be found on New York State's Department of Taxation and Finance website.
