Paula Washburn says deputies will sometimes give tickets but it’s still a problem.

She is talking about Fairway Drive and Middlecoff Drive in the Fairway Estates neighborhood, where she says through traffic has increased in recent years.

Whenever she takes a walk or checks her mail, she watches out for speeders or drivers running the stop sign.

“It’s like a racetrack. At night, sometimes you can hear them coming. They just shift gears and off they go,” Washburn said.

With no sidewalks, Washburn says drivers missing the stop sign or speeding can be dangerous for pedestrians.

“When you have no sidewalks to get up on, you’re trying to walk the dog or kids are going down the street, there’s no place to get to safety if someone is going 45 MPH,” Washburn said.

The speed limit on the road is 25 MPH.

Washburn says the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is aware of the issue and has patrolled the neighborhood before.

“They would come out and pull people over — 15-20 a day and give them warnings. And a few of them were repeaters so they would start giving tickets,” Washburn said.

City of Dunedin officials told Spectrum Bay News 9 that they have looked into issues at the intersection before but that it is up to law enforcement to address it.

Washburn understands deputies can’t always be there. But she’d like the city to consider more changes to help slow down traffic.

“There’s nothing more we can do. No one wants the worst case scenario where someone is going to get run over,” Washburn said.
