Two more candidates launched their campaigns for Buffalo mayor Wednesday night.
Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon has now officially thrown his hat in the ring.
He touted the recent passage of the capital budget, which he says will bring more than $200 million in infrastructure improvements to the city.
Some of the issues he wants to focus on includes affordable housing, reducing crime in neighborhoods, creating jobs and career opportunities, while supporting businesses and finding solutions to strengthen the long-term health of the city's finances.
"This campaign is about where we want to see our community go,” Scanlon said. “Do we want to see a city governed by hope and progress or do we want it to be a city led by negativity and fear? We know there's a lot of work ahead to improve our community, but that work starts today."
Michael Gainer, president of ReUse Action, also launched his Buffalo mayoral campaign.
Gainer says his campaign will be community-driven and contain new ideas.
He says he believes in making meaningful changes that don't just tackle one issue, but more than one.
He also wants to address things like local hiring, creating opportunities for young people, more small business growth, creating safe and healthy neighborhoods and more efficiency overall.
"I am here right here right now because of you and because of the people at home, and because of our communities and because we have immense potential that we can grasp and we can harness and we can focus and direct to make our neighborhoods healthier and more livable and safer for everyone that's in this room and everyone that's listening at home,” said Gainer.
Other candidates for mayor include state Sen. Sean Ryan, former fire commissioner Garnell Whitfield, Buffalo Common Councilor Rasheed Wyatt, James Payne — whose brother lost his life in the 2022 blizzard — and former city court judge James McLeod.
