The recent frigid temperatures can lead to cold-related emergencies like frostbite and hypothermia.

Some of the typical ways to prevent facing one of these mergencies is to bundle up and keep as much of your skin covered as possible.

Spectrum News 1 spoke with an ER doctor about some extra ways you can stay prepared and protected.

"Think about preparation of where you're at," Dr. Nicholas Kman, emergency medicine, Ohio State University, said. "So in your car, do you have an emergency kit in your car? Do you have an extra layer of clothing? Do you have a blanket? Those are things that can prevent frostbite and hypothermia and even how we fuel our body - eating a warm meal, keeping our calories up because malnutrition can effect how we regulate body temperature."

Dr. Kman also says some of the symptoms of frostbite and cold, painful skin, numbness and leathery or waxy skin.
