ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The winter weather is finally here. And when the snow comes down in Western New York, there is at least one Buffalo Bills super fan that is absolutely built for this.
"It started for me when I was in basic training in the Army in 1988. I missed home," said Chuck Skelly, who wore one uniform back then, but wears something a bit different now. "I took to being home as being a Bills fan."
So he settled back down a 40-minute drive from Highmark and got some inspiration from a fellow grizzly.
"I met 'Bills Elvis,' John Lang, and everybody knows who he is," he said. "I saw on his "armor" I call it, a University of Montana patch. Well, I went to college here too. So we were chatting about the University of Montana for a while. And then as I went home, I said I want to be somebody like that."
He just needed a wildly appropriate gimmick for a cold-weather team.
"I was at my son's mother's house and her and my son were picking on me," Chuck recalled. "'You're just a 'sasquatch. You're so hairy, blah, blah,' whatever. But in my head, I said, that's a good idea."
Since then it's been an emotional rollercoaster with the team, But every home gameday, Chuck meets up with his brother, Mike, in from Harrisburg. They get suited up and it's off to spread fictional character cheer through Orchard Park for "The Handler" and "Billsquatch."
"Part of the Bills Mafia family is getting everybody involved in the whole thing," Chuck said. "I'll walk up here and I'll see kids playing football. I'll jump right in and play with them."
"The best part is when the kids see it and then the families," added Mike. "At the end, we go to the handicapped lot and try and take it to them, too."
"BillsSquatch" and "The Handler" put the final touches on a blustery day even for the Mafia.
Should the Bills win or lose, it's hard not to enjoy a day out in the snow with fans of the division champs.
"For a day we don't have to worry about how heavy life can be," said Mike. "So, we try to take that joy out to everyone else."
"That just brings the element of Billsquatch to a head. It's like, this is my weather," said Chuck.
