The Buffalo Sabres are back home from their trip overseas to start the season, with plenty of work to be done before Thursday's home opener against the Los Angeles Kings.

The power play was a big issue in the team's 0-2 start to the season.

In two games against the New Jersey Devils, the unit went 0-for-6 while dealing with an injury to top-line forward JJ Peterka.

It was a focus at practice to start the week, with the man advantage unit getting in extra work before and during Tuesday’s workout.

“I think we’re trying a little bit too much,” said defenseman and captain Rasmus Dahlin. “Sometimes you’ve just got to just do the simple stuff, maybe work a little harder, even on the power play and, same there, we’ve got some details we worked on today. Today was way better. It’s a process, like I said. We’re fine.”

“We just need five guys on the same page,” said forward Tage Thompson. “I think speed is important, but it’s better to come up together. If you got one guy that’s just flying by himself and the rest of them aren’t reading off him, it’s tougher. So making sure we’re timing it right coming up together and just using each other. I think the last couple games we tried to do a little too one-on-one, and I think that’s because we weren’t coming up in sync, so I think today’s focus is just coming up together and get the timing down.”

The Sabres are at home against the Kings on Thursday at 7 p.m. and against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Saturday at 7 p.m.
