Plans are in the works to address the safety of student walking routes at West Seneca West Senior High School.
Assemblyman Pat Burke says this has become a significant traffic safety concern when school lets out with kids going to nearby businesses, citing a lack of sidewalks and signage.
"I don’t want to be the elected official who recognized a problem and didn’t try to do something about it," he said. "I don’t want on my conscience when some kid gets hit there because their government wasn’t responsive.
"We're working on taking action, so adding crossing signals [and] changing the infrastructure of that road."
One student, Richie Schack, started a petition and collected more than 400 signatures in hopes of bringing about change.
"I haven't necessarily seen accidents, but I know that they are possible and I would rather stop something before it happens,” said Schack. "...I believe a sidewalk would be a necessity, or some type of safety."
