EDEN, N.Y. — A fourth-generation family farm is picking up the pieces after a tornado tore through it Wednesday in the town of Eden.

“It’s very emotional,” said Catherine Mammoser, daughter of Don Mammoser at Mammoser Farms. “When I pulled up yesterday after it all occurred, you just, you would never expect it.”

She and her brother, David, said they continue to find new damage as they get their bearings a day later.

“We’re still trying to figure out how, what we’re going to do,” said David. “Been sorting the cattle all morning, trying to get them back together, hoping they calm down a little bit cause they’re still really spun out.”

They lost one calf to injuries but others were able to be treated after a barn collapsed while David was inside.

“It got windy and rainy and died down. Then all of a sudden I looked up and the roof was getting ripped off and I couldn’t see anything anywhere. And I kind of ducked for cover in the skid steer inside the barn. One of [the calves] was so panicked it turned and jumped in the skid steer with me on top of me pretty much.”

Debris is scattered acres away in a field and hanging from the power lines 24 hours later.

The family said they are in good spirits as they navigate the path forward. They went through similar weather damage in 2014 in the November storm.

“I think we just have a really great work ethic,” said Catherine. “We all have a great relationship and we’re all working together.”
