Hopefully, you were one of the lucky ones who got good use out of your eclipse glasses Monday, as a good chunk of Western New York was in the path of totality.
Now if you don't want to hold on to those glasses as a keepsake, think about donating them for future eclipses, or recycling them. There are groups nationwide collecting the glasses so they can be redistributed for free during future eclipses.
You could head to the Hamburg Public Library, where staff is collecting gently used eclipse glasses for the group, Astronomers Without Borders. They'll be redistributed around the globe to be used for future eclipse viewings.
"Wondering what to do with your eclipse glasses after the eclipse? Bring them back to the library!" the library posted on Facebook. "We will be sending any gently used glasses to Astronomers Without Borders for redistribution. The glasses will go across the globe to communities to view future eclipses."
Astronomers Without Borders also has collection sites in Rochester and Albany. Glasses that are in good shape can be dropped off at Warby Parker locations.
If you live outside of those areas, there's a group called Eclipse Glasses USA that is also collecting. You can email them at info@eclipse23.com for directions on where to send your eclipse glasses.
If you aren't able to donate, be sure to at least recycle what you can. The lenses aren't recyclable, but you can reduce waste by recycling the arms.
