BUFFALO, N.Y. — With an estimated one million visitors expected next week, City of Buffalo officials are taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe.

Mayor Byron Brown announced City Hall will close on April 8 to alleviate traffic during the solar eclipse.

"It’s going to get really busy in our city," said Mayor Brown. "This definitely can be a profitable event for businesses in the community…You will be happy to know that there is no bad vantage point to view the eclipse in the City of Buffalo."

He also recommended people run errands now in anticipation for crowds to begin arriving this Thursday.

Garbage pickup will be delayed by one day starting next week. Parking rules will be strictly enforced.

Buffalo Police Department officials said they are counting on collaboration to keep the city safe.

"Safety at large events truly is a team effort and the general public is the most important part of that team," said BPD Captain Marcus Rogowski. "We urge you, if you see something, say something."

Cell phone carriers said extra towers will be brought in to accommodate the density.

"We want to make sure everyone has a safe experience," BPD Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said. "The concern is the anticipated traffic jams with more vehicles on the roads, as well as the ability for police and fire departments to be able to respond to any emergency calls that might arise."

Visitors heading to solar eclipse events are encouraged to leave early and stay late. Locals are encouraged to view the eclipse from their home.
