Early voting is now underway and one county's Board of Elections says it's off to a slow start, though voting totals increased during the second day on Sunday.
According to Erie County Board of Elections supervisors, only 321 ballots were cast on day one for the presidential primary. They announced Sunday that 488 ballots were cast on the second day of early voting, for a two-day total of 809.
"We really encourage folks to want to get out and you want to vote in every single election," Erica Smitka, deputy director, League of Women Voters of New York State, said. "Right. And that does a couple of things. It empowers folks to build the habit of voting. If every time there's election you are showing up at the polls, you know, it makes your voice that much stronger, even if it's not super contested. The only thing that it does is it also lets our politician know that voters are watching, right?"
Early voting for this primary runs through Saturday with the official primary on April 2.
Another primary for federal, state and local elections will be held on June 25.
Polls will be open 12 - 9 p.m. on Monday, March 25.
