SILVER CREEK, N.Y. — Step one in making a grape pie is separating the pulp from the skins.

"They're not easy to make. They're unlike an apple where just cut the skin off and chop it up," said Nancy Fry of First United Presbyterian Church in Silver Creek.

What You Need To Know

  •  March 14 is Pi Day

  •  Pi Day is also celebrated with desserts like pie

  • In New York, a survey says people in the state would drive almost two hours to get a grape pie

Once separated, the pulp is placed on the stove and brought to a boil, while the skins are put through the blender. Then the pulp goes into a mixer where the seeds are separated from the pulp, which is mixed with the skins.

"People love them. There's nothing like a grape pie, there's nothing like a grape pie," said Nancy.

A recent survey from Mixbook, a national photobook company, ranked how far people said they'd travel to a state for its signature pie.

New York came in at number 29, with a travel time of an hour and 52 minutes for a grape pie.

"I'd add at least another hour to that, myself. We know people come from Buffalo. We get east of Buffalo. We get calls every year, save a grape pie for me," said Nancy.

Calls from visitors heading to Silver Creek each fall, where dozens of grape pies are sold at the annual Grape Festival. Organizers say New York State houses the largest Concord grape region in the world.

"Sometimes you get that little bit of tartness per bite. Sometimes it's super sweet. There are many different recipes out there that people do and they're all delicious," said Paul Crino, president of the Silver Creek Festival of Grapes.

Once the filling is ready, it's poured into the pie shell and covered with another piece of dough, which is pinched and then poked on top. Then it's put in the oven and baked at 425 degrees for about 45 minutes. Let it cool and then it's ready to serve.

Now in case you were wondering, the number one state in the survey with the longest travel time was Massachusetts as people said they would drive two hours and 32 minutes for a Boston Cream Pie.

If you would like the general recipe for the grape pie in this story, it's posted on the festival's Facebook page. However, we should tell you it may be tough to find any Concord grapes this time of year.
