Arguments continued Friday in civil cases connected to the racist mass shooting in East Buffalo last May in which 10 people were killed.
Victims’ families say social media companies like Meta, Snapchat, 4chan, Discord, YouTube and Amazon played a role in the attack.
"This day will determine whether the community of Buffalo has the opportunity to hold social media companies responsible and accountable for the carnage that their deliberate-designed decisions have inflicted on this community," said attorney Matthew Bergman. "It's not a question of whether we win or lose, it's that we get to play the game."
In Erie County Superior Court, attorneys for those companies argued the First Amendment protects the rights of speech and content online.
No ruling has been made, and any decision is expected to be appealed.
