The city of Buffalo’s Preservation Board is recommending a local site that dates back to the early 1900s be granted landmark status.

The board voted to recommend the Allied Mills Grain Elevator in South Buffalo be given the status to protect it from demolition.

Some people call the complex an eyesore and say they want to see it knocked down. However, preservationists say there is an opportunity to redevelop the site while protecting its historic character.

Non-profit Preservation Buffalo Niagara applied for landmark status on behalf of the complex, saying it received dozens of support letters from the community.

The board will now pass the recommendation along to the Buffalo Common Council, which will vote on it.
