BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown announced Thursday that five of the city's 11 pools will reopen for the summer on July 1. This is the first time the city has opened public pools since 2019.
Those include:
- Connors, Kait, Harrity Memorial Pool (Cazenovia)
- Lovejoy Pool
- Centennial Pool
- Kensington Pool
- Riverside Pool
Brown said this is possible because the city hired 73 lifeguards for the summer and have another 13 in training. Nekia Kemp, executive director of the Police Athletic League, credited a raise in wage to $20 an hour.
“This has been an extraordinary feat," said Kemp. "We are very excited that the pools are opening. We worked really hard to make sure that our youth had the opportunity to have a higher wage.”
In addition the city also has splash pads open at the following locations:
- Allison Park
- Cazenovia Park
- Houghton Park
- Lanigan Park
- Lincoln Park
- Masten Park
- Ralph Wilson Park
- Roosevelt Park
- Schiller Park
An additional splash pad will open at the Kensington pool, which is currently undergoing a $2 million renovation.
