New York state is seeing an increase in eviction filings after a nearly two-year moratorium ended early last year. 

Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations eviction dashboard shows evictions exceeded pre-pandemic levels in 2022 in 40 of the 62 counties in New York.

This comes after a two-year moratorium on evictions was lifted in early 2022.

The director of research at the ILR Buffalo Co-Lab, Russell Weaver, said these trends raise concerns for the overall wellbeing of impacted communities.

“The more mobility you have in and out of a community, the more those ties break down, the less effective communities become at organizing themselves, and public safety, and forming tight relationships,” said Weaver.

Weaver said an increase was expected but the group is keeping an eye on the data.
