Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin will play football again, NFL Players Association Medical Director Dr. Thom Mayer said on SiriusXM radio Wednesday.
“I don’t want to get into HIPAA issues, but I guarantee you, I guarantee you ... that Damar Hamlin will play professional football again,” he told a caller on the SiriusXM Doctor Radio’s “Heart to Heart” show.
Dr. Mayer did not elaborate further on how he came to this conclusion.
Hamlin collapsed on the field after suffering cardiac arrest during the Bills' game in Cincinnati against the Bengals back in January.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell kicked off his annual Super Bowl Week press conference by applauding team trainers and doctors not just with the Bills and Bengals, but those across the NFL.
"We practice and rehearse the actual drills for that exact circumstance,” said Goodell. “We have the best of the best on the field, including expertise that was critical in that moment. And I told the owners later in that week, the work they have invested in by bringing in these great professionals, by bringing in the best of the best, did contribute in saving a young man's life and I am incredibly proud of that."
Hamlin on Wednesday was announced to be the winner of the NFL Player Association's Alan Page Community award. It's the highest honor a player can ever receive from the NFLPA.
