SAN ANTONIO — Kunstance Dawson knows how it feels to go without power.

“A couple of years ago our family was a part of the freeze and we lost everything,” said Dawson, owner of Three Chicks Soul Food Catering.

She prepared spaghetti plates for Coronado Hills residents. Austin public housing tenants whose electricity has been off for days.

“We knew how it was to be without electricity and water and a place to live,” Dawson said.

Dawson now partners with Good Work Austin, a network of restaurants that steps up during disasters.

“If one place doesn’t have power, there’s so many others that do,” said Kevin Lawler, executive director of Good Work Austin. “Even though it’s warming up, there’s still a lot of need out there. All the power outages, all the people that haven’t been able to cook. Their places are getting cold.”

Kevin says during this winter storm, 12 restaurants have prepped and delivered 3,300 meals.

“It was nice to get some last night,” said Mellissa Ollan, a Coronado Hills resident. “We didn’t have anything in the house to cook.”

Dawson says it is a blessing to help feed families after this latest freeze.

“It was a great deal for me to do,” Dawson said.
