BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Naval Park is currently assessing damage to its three retired warships stemming from last month’s historic winter storm.
While The Little Rock and Croaker were spared from hull leaks, USS The Sullivans took in more than 34 inches of water in the engine room. The Naval Park's Hangar Building suffered damages as well when a pipe burst during the blizzard and the sprinkler system deployed. Naval Park CEO Paul Marzello Sr. said those damages could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs to electrical infrastructure and drywall. Despite the damages, Marzello remains optimistic.
"This ship is not sinking," he said. "We went through quite an ordeal back in April and right now, we're very positive and in a good place. Right now, we're making sure that she's going to stay afloat for a good, long time."
USS The Sullivans sprung a minor leak on the starboard side near an area that was patched in April. The bow is now sitting higher in the water than it was prior to the storm. Marzello said they have been making inquiries to have a hydrographic survey conducted to see if the bottom of the harbor near and below the ships has also altered due to the storm. They are still investigating the source and lab tests show the water quality is safe to do so. They are pumping out affected areas. Some stairway and deck repairs are now needed for the ships.
"In light of all the hardships that are going on in our community, this is a snowstorm in which we receive some damages to things that can be repaired," Marzello said.
Last April, USS The Sullivans began taking on millions of gallons of water, listing 45 degrees to the side and leaking oil into the water. Restoration crews worked to plug more than 50 holes and remove more than 75,000 gallons of oily waste.
