SPRINGVILLE, N.Y. — Just as fast as the holiday season comes, it goes. And after, the Christmas tree must come down — but what do you do with it?
Here's something different in Western New York: donating it to 'Let's Goat Buffalo.'
The nonprofit organization based in Springville currently has 35 rescued goats that love to munch.
Typically they are eating hay or grazing in a field, but during the winter, Christmas trees can offer them a fresh green treat. Plus, feeding them Christmas trees is an environmentally friendly way to get rid of your trees.
"So if you think about how many of us are bringing home live trees, that's a lot of Christmas trees that end up in landfills,” said Jennifer Zeitler, Let's Goat Buffalo founder. “And unfortunately even though you're thinking, ‘well, a tree is going to biodegrade,’ in a landfill they can't get the oxygen and the light that they need to be able to break down. So this is a nice alternative."
Let's Goat Buffalo says after all the green is eaten, they woodchip the skeletons on the trees and use them for bedding and other things on the farm.
