BUFFALO, N.Y. — The city of Buffalo continues to heal from the mass shooting at Tops in May.

On Friday, the community honored Katherine 'Kat' Massey, who was killed that horrific day.

Trailblazer signs dedicated to Massey were unveiled Friday afternoon. The signs marking "Katherine 'Kat' Massey Way" are on Cherry Street from Mortimer Street to Jefferson Avenue and Virginia streets in Buffalo.

A ceremony was held to celebrate Massey and highlight her role in the community. Organizer Betty Jean Grant says Cherry Street had great significance for Massey, as it was where she grew up, and is where some of her current family lives.

The unveiling was an emotional moment for Massey's sister, Barbara Massey Mapps, and the rest of her family.

"Kat was just a wonderful human being,” said Massey Mapps. “She loved everybody. She took care of many a people. She did so much, she had to write it down so as to remember. And from my family, we just want to thank each and one of you all. We are so … thank you. We are so blessed. Thank you is not even enough, but thank y’all from the bottom of my heart.”

Katherine Massey is remembered as a local civil rights advocate in the city of Buffalo. Massey was also a member of "We Are Women Warriors," a group that works to reduce the level of gun violence and homicides as well as increase economic development within Buffalo's African American community.
