TONAWANDA, N.Y. — New York state lawmakers are renewing the push to pass a bill that would force Amigone Funeral Home’s Sheridan Park Crematory in Tonawanda to relocate or close.

The facility has been shut down in the past for environmental health concerns from plumes of black smoke, odor, and falling ash; once by the DEC from 2012 to 2018 and once in 2020 for four months.

“We just basically have had enough,” said Assemblyman William Conrad, of the 140th district. “The neighbors have had enough. As legislators, we’ve had enough. We kind of wanted to give them a last chance to consider moving.”

The funeral home is grandfathered in to NYS legislation that bans combination crematory and funeral homes. This bill would honor the exemption but require them to move within the Town of Tonawanda.

Amigone Funeral Home did not immediately return a request for comment.

Conrad said he will reintroduce the bill to the Assembly in January.
