BUFFALO, N.Y. —  The president of the National Urban League joined lawmakers at the memorial for victims of last month’s mass shooting at a Buffalo Tops supermarket that left 10 people dead.

Marc Morial was joined by Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Congressman Brian Higgins and State Senator Tim Kennedy.

Morial called on Congress to address devastating gun violence by banning assault rifles and passing universal background checks. He urged action of domestic terror and racism in this country and he says part of the solution will be investing in communities of color.

"At its core, the economic uplift and revival of this neighbor and East Buffalo should include a focus on housing, a focus on youth [and] a focus on health and mental health,” Morial said.

Lawmakers are set to hear directly from families impacted by this tragedy in Buffalo.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform is holding a hearing Wednesday to discuss next steps to address the gun violence crisis and will hear from family members from Buffalo and Uvalde., Texas.
