BUFFALO, N.Y. — After Saturday’s mass shooting in Buffalo, many are still processing what happened and how the loss of each individual person will affect the community as a whole.

One of those lost is Katherine Massey, who was not only a member of the Buffalo community, but an activist who fought for fairness and freedom for her fellow community members.

Massey was a member of 'We Are Women Warriors,' a group that worked to keep gang violence out of Buffalo, while also working to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community.

A friend of hers says she was always trying to help her community in any way possible.

“Katherine was a person who was making sure that her community needs were met,” said Betty Jean Grant, We Are Women Warriors community activist. “She was making sure that people who wanted to own a home got that opportunity to own a home. She was making sure that when kids went to school, they went to a school that was safe — that they came back to the community that was safe as well."

Grant also said Massey was a community mom who was compassionate, fearless and opinionated — and she's looking forward to keeping her legacy alive.
