BUFFALO, N.Y. — Disability service providers are pushing for change to help increase job opportunities for people with special needs.

According to a study by the Rockefeller Institute of Government, nonprofit service providers contributed more than $14 billion to New York state’s economy. The study also shows that 67% of people with disabilities are unemployed.

Organizations like The Arc Erie County and New York State Industry for the Disabled are pushing to modernize legislation that will help care the whole individual outside of work.

“What we’re talking about is making sure that systems are in place that allow individuals with disabilities who want to work can go to work,” said Michael Seereiter, president and CEO of the New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation. “And providing them with any of the supports that they need to live their lives and live their lives to the fullest.”

This includes help with things like getting out of bed, getting organized at home or making sure they have a safe place to sleep.

Advocates say they are pushing the legislature to pass the bills before summer recess in June.
