CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A student at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology is accused of bringing a loaded gun to school.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says the loaded gun was found as the student was passing through a body scanner at the high school, which was in use for the second time since its recent installation.
The student, whose name and grade have not been released, was arrested a short time later.
“A student was found with a loaded weapon on our campus,” Principal Tanya Branham wrote in a message to families Monday morning. “All students and staff are safe, and learning and teaching are continuing.”
The school did not go on lockdown since the weapon was found upon arrival, school officials said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools intended to roll out clear backpacks for students this year, but the district halted the move after discovering a label on the backpacks warned of potentially cancer-causing chemicals.

CMS plans to continue training for security scanners and hire additional campus security.
In February, the district activated the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System in middle and high schools. The system encourages students and adults to tell a trusted adult directly about a potential threat, or submit a tip anonymously via the Say Something app, at www.saysomething.net or by calling 1-844-5-SayNOW.
