LANCASTER, N.Y. — Elected leaders are pushing for a new thruway exit in the town of Lancaster.
Town Supervisor Ron Ruffino said an exit at Gunnville Road between exits 48A and 49 on I-90 would ease traffic on Genesee St., especially commercial trucks.
“I feel this is a well-worth project,” he said. “I think I have enough ammunition to show a need for this. And I’ll just have to take it one step at a time.”
State Senators Tim Kennedy and Patrick Gallivan are in support of the idea and wrote to the NYS Thruway Authority asking about the possibility. NYS Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew Driscoll wrote back detailing the “multifaceted” process, saying it would involve a number of steps, including conducting traffic and environmental studies, compliance with state and federal regulations and ensuring the revenue would offset the costs involved.
Sen. Kennedy said he still believes it is a worthwhile project.
“It allows for further investment of private sector dollars and so the whole goal here is to improve our economy,” he said.
The idea is in its early stages and, if approved, it would take several years to complete.
