Western New York Independent Living is going to start distributing thousands of at-home COVID tests starting Wednesday.

The kits will be distributed through its main office in Buffalo and through its affiliates, Independent Living of the Genesee Region in Batavia, Independent Living of Niagara County in Niagara Falls and the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service in Cheektowaga.

"Too often people with disabilities are forgotten or underserved. This has been especially true during the COVID pandemic," a press release reads. "Western New York Independent Living (WNYIL) and members of its Family of Agencies are helping to change that, if even only a little. The organization is distributing complimentary COVID Home Test Kits to many of the thousands of people with disabilities it serves. WNYIL expects to distribute more than 7,000 kits over the next few weeks."

The full distribution of more than 7,000 kits is set to take place over the new few weeks.

WNYIL leaders say this initiative is meant to be a short-term solution until testing kits are more widely available at stores and local pharmacies.

"Provided as a temporary convenience, as supplies are limited, the kits are only available to people who participate in WNYIL programs, receive WNYIL services, and/or are qualified Listeners to the Radio Reading Service," the release continued. "This is only meant to be a short-term solution while the manufacturing and distribution of the kit’s scales to a point where they are more readily available at retailers and other places."

Members can pick up their kits at the nearest WNYIL office or request a contact-free delivery, though you should expect that process to take more than a week.
