BUFFALO, N.Y. — The city of Buffalo has set a new record for snowfall.

The amount of snow that fell on Thursday was measured at 17.8 inches, according to the National Weather Service. That shatters the previous record for Jan. 6 of 7.3 inches that stood since 1974.

It was a close call, but Buffalo fell just short of setting another record. The measurement for Thursday was just a half-inch shy of being the most snow for any day in the month of January.

Friday is expected to be much quieter for the Buffalo area with the snow shifting to the Southern Tier.
