BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown now wants to make every effort possible to preserve Buffalo's Great Northern Grain Elevator, which was badly damaged in a wind storm earlier this month.

The company that owns the property, Archer Daniels Midland, or ADM, submitted an emergency demolition application, a request the city approved last week.

ADM says the historic structure is a danger to the surrounding area and is not feasible to repair.

But in a letter sent to ADM's Chief Executive Officer Juan Luciano, Mayor Brown said, “The Great Northern Elevator is the only surviving brick box elevator in North America and the oldest surviving elevator in Buffalo's Grain Silo District … While saving the elevator will carry a hefty cost, there are programs that could significantly offset those costs."

Brown adds the city will offer support in securing resources like historic and brownfield tax credits and city property tax abatements to save the structure.

The campaign for Greater Buffalo History and Architecture filed a temporary restraining order to block the emergency demolition permit.

That group will meet in court with ADM Monday to discuss the Grain Elevator's fate.
