GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — The Grand Island Town Board has voted and they are opposed to the Erie County mask mandate and any future mandate related to COVID.

Members of the public spent about an hour sharing their points of view on the mandates.

Many people bringing up the fact that of the 63 counties in New York, only Erie has remained in a state of emergency throughout the pandemic, and is the only county in the area imposing mandates.

Town Board members also shared concerns in regards to reoccurring mandates. They say many people are worried about what further mandates might do to their livelihood.

"We had businesses calling us, literally scared to death they were going to be shut down again, telling us, begging us to voice their concern and parents calling with similar concerns with their children," Councilman Mike Madigan said.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has said in past briefings that the county will evaluate data on December 13 and determine if the county will need to enter the next phase of his plan, which would be mandatory vaccines to enter public places.
