TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A 30-year-old woman accused of beating her newborn son to death in the Town of Tonawanda is facing murder charges.

This comes following a nearly yearlong investigation by Erie County District Attorney John Flynn, who says it’s possibly the worst case he has seen in his five years in office.

"This is a case I can barely even talk about without getting upset," Flynn said.

Flynn says during the early hours of October 5, 2020, Andee Wright gave birth to her son alone at her home in the Town of Tonawanda.

Flynn says Wright's boyfriend was out with a friend at the time. He says when they returned home, they did not know Wright had given birth, but saw she was in distress. They called 911 and she was rushed to the hospital.

"A short time later, they found the baby's body in a garbage can in the basement of the home,” Flynn said. “The baby was dead.”

Flynn says the district attorney's office spent the last 11 months trying to determine if the baby was alive or dead when it was born. He says he cannot discuss the sort of testing that was done or the exact results.

"It's safe to say obviously that I am proceeding on a murder prosecution here and I have determined — not me, but we — have determined that the baby was born alive," Flynn said.

Flynn says Wright allegedly struck the baby in the head and killed him shortly after he was born. He says the cause of death was blunt force trauma and focally penetrating trauma. Flynn says Wright turned herself in for the arraignment on Tuesday.

"The fact that she turned herself in, has an 8-year-old child here in the area, has family ties to the area — that was her lawyer’s argument that she should have bail," Flynn said.

An Erie County Court judge set Wright's bail at $75,000. Wright now faces two counts of murder in the second degree.

The DA’s office says if Wright is convicted of all charges, she faces 25 years to life in prison.
