WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — It’s one of the most thrilling and, unintentionally, best-kept secrets: firematic racing. Over 40 teams comprised of the state’s fastest firefighters competed in the 2021 New York State Championship Drill, carrying on a tradition that began in 1886. This year, the Slo-Pokes Drill Team hosted the event at the Main-Transit Fire Department grounds in Williamsville, bringing a need for speed and an action-packed event to stands of cheering spectators.

  • Firematic racing, or drill-team racing, is a sport of firefighters that combines traditional skills of the occupation with competing in timed races

  • Over 40 teams of volunteer firefighters from across New York state competed in the competition this year

  • Firematic racing is said to contribute to recruitment and retention within fire departments, skill building, strengthening teamwork and character development

“We’re really excited to host," said Jeffrey Karl, Main-Transit firefighter and member of the Slo-Pokes. "A lot of our sister and brother firefighters from across New York state are in attendance with us. So at the end of the day, it’s about family and the camaraderie amongst all the competitors.”

August 21 was a day of food, fun and family as community members came to support the home team and come face-to-face with the action. The drill not only carries on the rich tradition and history of firematic racing, but it helps builds bonds within the community.

“It’s a huge part of how Main-Transit helps bring in new members and helps keep other members involved," Karl said. "All the skills are based off of your foundational firefighting skills that started over the past 70 to 80 years that have just evolved over time."

The drill is about much more than showmanship. It evokes teamwork, character-development, and skill-building, an exciting combination of department and community pride, as each team competed to be among the best in state.

“Being a part of the team, being a part of the department, it’s a huge family," Karl said. "We take a lot of pride in the Slo-Pokes and the firematic racing. We’re excited to have everybody here this year.”
