BUFFALO, N.Y. — As the NFL will release its schedule for the upcoming season Wednesday, a local expert is outlining what that could means for Bills fans.
Mark Karwan is a professor at UB’s School of Engineering, but he’s made a name in the sports world using mathematical programming.
It started in 2012 when the Bills GM at the time claimed the team had too many games against rested opponents. Karwan used his expertise to examine the scheduling process, and submitted a paper that caught the attention of both ESPN and the NFL.
With the Bills success last season, Karwan says the team should have more primetime games, and a harder overall schedule.
“The schedule release with the Bills where they are, and playing both Kansas City and Tampa Bay this year, and of course New England twice, where do you put them to make everything work, and do that with other teams and get a good schedule?” Karwan said.
Karwan says the research explores trillions of possible combinations before coming up with a handful of potential schedules.
The NFL will release the 2021 schedule at 8 p.m.
Details of the Bills season opener have already been announced. According to the team, the Bills will kick off the 2021 season at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game will be broadcast on September 12 on CBS at 1 p.m.
