Western New York lawmakers continue to call for action as the U.S., Canadian border remains closed to non-essential travel for at least another three weeks.
Congressman Brian Higgins says he is pushing the Department of Homeland Security to expand the definition of an essential traveler, a move that could help loved ones separated by the border closure to be reunited.
Accroding to Higgins, the Canadian government has allowed both immediate and extended family members of Canadian citizens to cross the border, something he says the U.S. has not permitted so far.
In a statement, Higgins said in part, "People living on either side of the U.S. – Canada border have already lost a year of time with their loved ones and they should not have to wait one more day. The U.S. can and should take immediate action to allow family members to be together again.”
An official with Homeland Security says he plans to take Higgins' concerns before the task force working to develop a reopening plan for the border.
