BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Enterprise Charter School and the Westminster Community Charter School in the Buffalo Public School District will shut down after this school year.

The decision comes after many of the Board of Education members have cited low achievement and proficiency rates in reading and math over time.

The board voted to not renew the charters, which will expire on June 30.

They wanted to be clear, this decision was not based just on the past year during COVID.

"What is clear today in our community is that the bar has been raised. If you are going to function in Buffalo as a Charter school, you will maintain the requirements of being innovative and high performing with high academic achievement. We have to make sure our children are prepared for the future," Sharon Belton-Cottman, Buffalo Board of Education president, said.

Now there is a plan to turn Westminster into a regular public school, being that it is in a Buffalo Public School building and has strong ties to that community on Bailey Avenue.

Spectrum News is told the district will be in touch with families on plans going forward.
