BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo’s Police Advisory Board is discussing Mayor Byron Brown’s recommendations to improve the Buffalo Police Department.

The board, an independent advisory committee created by the city’s Common Council, says the mayor released his police reform agenda Wednesday. It includes several suggestions that the BPD and community members requested, including a ban on chokeholds, utilizing de-escalation techniques, and reinforcing policies such as the Officer’s Duty to Intervene.

However, the PAB says the police department’s de-escalation policy isn’t clear about in which situations those techniques should be used.

Board members are also asking the mayor to answer why this plan excludes a truly independent police oversight model. That’s despite receive two years’ worth of community research input from the advisory board.

Spectrum News has reached out to the mayor’s office for comment.
