Home for the holidays has a different meaning this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some people won’t be able to visit family, and hold traditional gatherings like years past.
“Some of these seniors live in Western New York all by themselves and their family is all over the country. Obviously with COVID, folks aren’t traveling and with visitation rules, they’re not even able to get it,” says Mave Milligan, Oasis Senior Living Advisor.
Oasis Senior Advisors, a free service for seniors and their families, ran a campaign called, “Caring Cards for Seniors” from March through May. People in the community of all ages made cards that were then ventilated outside and given to residents at area senior living communities.
“What we saw from these communities was pure joy on the residents faces to have a card that was addressed to someone special whether it was from a child saying, ‘I know these are tough times’ or ‘Have a beautiful day,’ or cute pictures of flowers,” Milligan said.
With the holiday season here, and the reality that during this pandemic, many seniors won’t be able to see family members, Oasis is encouraging people to make more cards.
“Our goal is to deliver a card to every senior in a care facility in Erie and Niagara County, so that would be an exceptional thing if we were able to do that,” says Matthew Gardiner, Oasis Senior Advisors Owner.
Anyone can help from professional artists to young kids using cardboard and stickers. Card making and delivery instructions are on the Oasis Senior Advisors Buffalo Facebook page.
