BUFFALO, N.Y. — After a year of construction, those visiting the Queen City by rail will now be greeted by a brand new train station.

The Exchange Street Amtrak Station officially opened Sunday. It replaced the former station that was 66 years old.

The station can seat more than 400 people and has a kiosk offering goods from local agricultural and food businesses. A longer, train level platform was also installed for easier boarding.

City officials say the new station was a necessary addition to a downtown in the midst of a renaissance.

"It’s been a long time coming. This great facility is so much better than what we had. It’s such a great compliment for downtown Buffalo and all the great things we have happening, Canalside, obviously Seneca Tower, right nearby. It’s all good, and a great introduction for people coming to Buffalo for the first time," Bruce Becker, president of the Empire State Passengers Association, said.

The new station is at the same relative location as the former station, only closer to the street and directly across from Sahlen Field.
